Abstract

The College originated from the Department of Laboratory Medicine established in 1986. In 1997, it adopted the "integration of department and college" model with the Clinical Laboratory of the Affiliated Hospital and was renamed the Department of Laboratory Medicine. In 2001, it merged with the Health Science Teaching and Research Section to form the College of Laboratory Medicine and Public Health. In 2004, it further merged with the Biology Teaching and Research Section to establish the College of Laboratory Medicine (College of Life Sciences). Operating under the administrative system of "two brands, one management team", the College comprises 5 departments: Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Department of Cell Biology and Genetics, Department of Pathogenic Biology and Immunology, Department of Basic Laboratory Medicine, and Department of Health Inspection and Quarantine. It houses two provincial-level experimental teaching demonstration centers: the Zhejiang Provincial Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center for Biology and the Zhejiang Provincial Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center for Medical Laboratory Diagnostics. Currently, it serves as the Vice Chairmanship Unit of the Intercollegiate Collaborative Council for Medical Laboratory Specialty in Chinese Institutions of Higher Education.

The College boasts a complete integrated talent cultivation system covering undergraduate, masters, and doctoral programs. It offers 4 undergraduate majorsMedical Laboratory Technology, Clinical Medicine (Laboratory Physician Training Experimental Class), Health Inspection and Quarantine, and Biotechnologyall designated as National First-Class Major Construction Sites. The Medical Laboratory Technology major is a National Characteristic Major, and has consistently ranked among the top 5% (5-star rating) in Chinese university major rankings over the past five years according to the China University and Subject Evaluation Report (Qiu Junping Edition). The Clinical Medicine (Laboratory Physician Training Experimental Class) is one of the first national reform pilot classes. The Health Inspection and Quarantine major has also maintained a top 5% ranking (5-star rating) among universities nationwide over the past five years per the same report. Two disciplinesBiology and Biochemistry, and Molecular Biology and Geneticsrank in the top 1% of ESI global rankings. The College currently has 1,568 enrolled students, with a graduate employment rate of over 95% and 100% employer satisfaction.

The College has 156 faculty and staff members, including 82 full-time teachers, 67% of whom hold senior titles. It is home to 12 national-level talents and 25 provincial-level talents, as well as 5 ministerial/provincial-level teaching and research teams: Medical Genetics Team, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Teaching Team, Clinical Laboratory Diagnostic Technology Technological Innovation Team, Tumor New Target Discovery and Application Technological Innovation Team, and Circulating Nucleic Acid Gene Detection New Technology and Clinical Application Team. Faculty members have won 13 national-level teaching awards and 18 provincial-level honors. The College offers 3 national-level courses and 22 provincial-level courses, and has edited or participated in compiling over 60 national planning textbooks (published by People's Medical Publishing House, Higher Education Press, etc.) and more than 30 academic works. Students have secured 21 national-level awards (including 4 gold medals) such as the Gold Medal at the China International College Students' Innovation Competition and the Gold Medal at the "Challenge Cup" National University Students' Science and Technology Academic Competition; 98 awards (20 first prizes) at the National University Students' Life Science Competition; and 197 awards (24 first prizes) at the Zhejiang Provincial University Students' Life Science Competition. Graduate students have published papers in Science as first authors, and the College has produced three recipients of the Zhejiang Provincial Excellent Doctoral Dissertation Award. The College has also been repeatedly awarded the Excellent Organization Award at the Zhejiang Provincial University Students' Life Science Competition.

The College holds first-level discipline masters and doctoral programs in Medical Technology, second-level discipline masters and doctoral programs in Clinical Laboratory Diagnostics, and a first-level discipline masters program in Biology, along with a postdoctoral research station. Medical Technology is listed as a Zhejiang Provincial First-Class Discipline (Class A), and Cell Biology is a key discipline of Zhejiang provincial universities. It features 15 research platforms, including the Key Laboratory of Laboratory Medicine of the Ministry of Education, the Key Laboratory of Vaccine and Biological Product Quality Monitoring and Evaluation of the National Medical Products Administration, the Zhejiang Provincial Key Laboratory of Medical Genetics, the Zhejiang Provincial Key Laboratory of Laboratory Diagnostics and Translational Research, the Zhejiang One Health Collaborative Innovation Center, and multiple municipal-level key laboratories and research institutes.

In recent years, the College has secured nearly 380 research projects at all levels, including 9 national key/grand projects (e.g., National Key R&D Program, international cooperation and exchange projects) and nearly 160 national-level projects (e.g., National Natural Science Foundation of China). Faculty members have published over 500 SCI-indexed papers in authoritative academic journals such as Science, Science Translational Medicine, and PNAS; obtained 80 national invention patents; and completed 18 achievement transformations.
